The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of our Christian faith and life.
It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.”
The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and means by which the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit reveals himself to men and “reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #234).
It is in this loving relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that we hope to abide eternally in heaven. If we are not growing now in that mystery, we are not in reality growing any closer to heaven. If that is the case, we are missing the point of the whole history of salvation which is identical with the revelation of the Trinitarian God and our faith is in danger of becoming merely superficial.
God the Father sent his Son to assume our human condition and nature so that we could share in his. Just as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit love, communicate and know each other and are no more than one will, one power and one dominion, in such a way that one cannot do anything without the other, may we realise that that is precisely what we are created for, to dwell in God and God in us.
