The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is a Holy Day of Obligation. On these days, as on Sundays, we are obliged to attend Mass.
There will be a Vigil Mass on Wednesday at 7pm, and a Morning Mass at 10am on Thursday.
On Ascension Thursday, we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. This event is the last of the mysteries of his life here on earth. It is a redemptive mystery that, together with his Passion, Death and Resurrection, makes up the Paschal Mystery.
Those who had seen him mocked, ridiculed and falsely condemned him. They now see him exalted, and fulfilling his promise, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God”.
The Ascension strengthens and nourishes our own hope of attaining Eternal Life. The words of the Preface of Holy Mass for this day invites us to lift up our hearts to seek the things which are above. With the Ascension, Jesus’ earthly mission comes to a close and ours, as his disciples, begins, with Jesus interceding for us before the Father and the Holy Spirit counselling and inspiring us to be his witnesses to the end of time.
