Feast of St Mary Magdalene (Magdala)
Over the centuries Mary of Magdala has been confused with the woman in St Luke 7:37 who was a sinner and anoints Jesus with ointment much to the dismay of the Pharisees. She is also not the woman caught in the act of adultery (St John 8: 3-12) and brought before Jesus by the Pharisees. Mary of Magala, is the woman mentioned in St Luke 8: 2-3, as the person from whom seven demons had gone out.
Mary is one of the women who accompany Jesus and the disciples and care for them out of their own means and resources. She accompanies Mary, the Mother of Jesus and stands faithfully at the cross with her and St John. St Mark tells us that she is the first to witness the Resurrection of Jesus and St John tells her of her encounter with the risen Jesus in his Gospel and being sent to tell the Apostles.
Mary was a courageous, faithful and loyal disciple and servant of the Lord who became a witness to Jesus’s resurrection. She had a deep love for Jesus after her conversion and healing and cared for His emotional and physical needs along with the other holy women who followed Jesus.
