Matthew 7: 1-5

Matthew 7: 1-5
Jesus speaks today about condemnatory judgements in our Gospel. We do pass judgements on people and situations in our lives which are completely legitimate. It is when that judgement becomes condemnatory that we enter into the realm of God and do something which should lie with God alone. God has a fairness and accuracy which we lack and God sees the heart completely and its true motivation.
Jesus makes a stark warning. We ourselves set the standards of our personal judgement by our own conduct towards others. God forgives as we forgive, God is tender as we are tender to each other, as Jesus says “the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given”.
St Augustine makes a very revealing point when he speaks about this passage
“Try to acquire those virtues which you think your brothers lack and you will no longer see their defects, because you will not have them yourselves”.
