Fr Joe has written this short reflection on today’s Gospel passage.
In addition to the 12 Apostles there were many disciples following Jesus. He commissions in today’s Gospel 72 disciples with a specific mission and particular instructions. “The harvest is rich but the labourers are few.” The mission is enormous and Jesus seeks co-workers who are willing to totally abandon themselves to Him and detach themselves from those very things that divides their hearts from him. The disciple needs to be passionate about the Lord and prepared for sacrifice.
The Lord’s instructions about the spreading of the Kingdom of God are definitive. When we are faithful to them in humility and obedience, the Lord will bless our efforts as we have kept our eye and focus on him and the advancement of his Kingdom and not ours.
