First Book of Kings 17: 1-6

First Book of Kings 17: 1-6

Elijah the prophet is sent to King Ahab by God the Father. In obedience to his Lord and Master he foretells the drought that the true God of Israel will inflict on Israel. God the Father will demonstrate by this drought, His superiority over the false Canaanite God Baal. It was claimed that Baal was master over the forces of nature, fertility, storms and rains and the true and only God of Israel proves this wrong.

Elijah the prophet after fulfilling faithfully his mission is then instructed to hide in the wadi Cherith which lies East of the River Jordan. Here God’s providence will care for his hunger and thirst.

Elijah recognises God’s power over nature and his Divine providence that looks after his basic needs. Unfortunately, as we move through First and Second Kings, we will see that the idolatry and corruption of the Kings of Israel will cause Israel’s demise. The country divides, it is exiled and Jerusalem and the temple are destroyed.

Removing ourselves from God’s covenant never ends happily. Israel’s history is testament to that.  God cannot protect and provide for us, when we consciously choose to live our lives according to an alternative covenant. Hopefully we will not learn that lesson the hard way.
