Fr Joe writes this short reflection on the Gospel passage for the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.
Nicodemus is a member of the Sanhedrin and comes to visit Jesus under the cover of darkness. Although it is a tentative approach to Jesus, he does not approach Jesus to spy or to catch him out but seeks the truth.
Jesus speaks of his mission from the Father, who in utter love sends Jesus among us. We are offered through Jesus’s life, death and resurrection, the divine life of the Trinity. To believe in Jesus is the prerequisite to share in the Trinity’s eternal life. We receive this gift through our Baptism in the hope that we will possess it permanently in heaven.
However, Jesus speaks about those who do not believe in him. Disbelief, is understood as a form of rebelliousness, as we live according to our own set of commandments and teachings. If we persist in that condition, we risk a disinheritance. No one can free themselves from sin, we all need a Saviour and that is Jesus who offers us grace and life. We can only enter new life by putting our old life and ways behind. Only in Jesus is that possible, the mediator between God and man.
