John 14:15-21

Read this short reflection on the Gospel for the sixth Sunday of Easter.
“I will not leave you orphans,” said Jesus in today’s Gospel. We see the tenderness of Jesus in these words to his disciples. There is a deep concern from Jesus as he senses the sadness of his friends. Although Jesus will withdraw his physical person from our human experience, he will not abandon us as he will be present to us especially in our liturgies, in the living word of the scriptures and in the sanctifying graces that come from the Sacraments. “Know that I am with you always, to the end of the age”.

Jesus continues in this dialogue to herald the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will continue to teach all that Jesus revealed while on earth, reminding us of these truths. The Holy Spirit will not reveal anything new but give us a clearer insight and better understanding of Jesus’s instructions. The Holy Spirit will accompany us by consoling and protecting us. The Holy Spirit will infuse us with knowledge and courage to help us defend the Gospel and the deposit of faith, so that we can follow  and point others to that path, leading to eternal life.

The gift of knowledge puts us in tune with God’s gaze on things and on people.
