St John 14:21-26

St John 14:21-26

Jesus tells us today in our Gospel Passage, that those who are prepared to try and live their lives in accordance with his commandments and teachings have opened their hearts to him in love. In contrast Jesus proposes that those who ignore his word, his teachings, in reality may claim to love him but their actions suggest otherwise. To know Jesus, is to accept what he revealed through his commandments and teachings.

St Judas Thaddeus’s question indicates to us that the Apostles like ourselves, did not always understand some of Jesus’s teachings but did seek that lucidity to understand. Their openness to the promised Holy Spirit, would allow their minds to be penetrated by Him, so as to clear up their confusion and doubts.

We may have left school and education a long time ago and moved on from our teachers. The Holy Spirit though, is always our teacher and He desires to come to our homes, to remind us of Jesus’s instructions and teachings, so that the Father and Jesus can truly make their homes in us.

“To put into practice the teachings of our holy faith, it is not enough to convince ourselves that they are true; we must love them. Love united to faith makes us practice our religion.”
St. Alphonsus Liguori
