St John 14:1-6
This is a Gospel Passage which we will be very familiar with since it is used very often at Funeral Masses. Jesus speaks to his Apostles about returning to his Father’s house and how he goes there before them, to prepare a place in heaven for them. It is the Father’s desire that we all spend eternity with him and Jesus shows St Thomas that he himself is the way, the route to that eternal dwelling with the Trinity.
Jesus is the path, the way that links earth to heaven. It is in imitating the Son that we reach the Father, because the truth that Jesus imparts to us, through his teachings, we have the directions that give us his very life “so whoever believes in me may have eternal life”
Jesus has already stated that to know Jesus is also to know the Father as the Father and Jesus are one. To know someone, is different to know of someone. In the scriptural sense of the word, to know means to be intimately joined to, to be as one, to be of one flesh. In other words, to know Jesus, is to believe him, believe in him and live our lives in accordance with that belief. That is why Jesus says he is the way, that is, the route to the Father, as his teachings are the truth which make us partakers in his life , a life in which we will abide eternally.
