St John 6: 11-18
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, in today’s Gospel passage anticipates his own death and passion as he tells us that “the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep”. Jesus will literally lay down on a cross. This is the price of unconditional love, the proof of how dear he holds us and how much he loves his Father. He does so voluntarily and without coercion or threat. If we ever doubt that God loves us, just look at the cross and remind yourself of the words of St Peter “By his wounds, we are healed”.
Let us pray: May the pain, rejection and sacrifice you suffered for me, resound at this moment in my own heart and touch any coldness and indifference I have towards you and my neighbour. O Jesus, the Good Shepherd soften all hardness in me and give me a heart like yours. Amen.
