Luke 24: 35-48

As the two disciples recount their story of what occurred on the road to Emmaus, the Risen Jesus appears yet again to the assembled disciples. His presence receives a fearful reaction as they imagine that a ghost is visiting them. Jesus invites them to touch him and to eat with them to calm their fears and erase their doubts.

As with the disciples on the road to Emmaus he opens their hearts and minds to Sacred Scripture, his living word, where all that is taking place now, was contained in the Old Testament. He has fulfilled those prophecies through his passion, death and resurrection.

Jesus now invites the disciples in his name, to preach repentance and forgiveness of sin. They can do so personally, as witnesses to the reality and significance of the Resurrection. With this commissioning comes the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, to empower their human endeavours. It is only with the Holy Spirit’s authority and power that they will teach and preach the Good News beginning as instructed in Jerusalem and then to all nations.

Fear not, I am with you; be not dismayed; I am your God. I will  strengthen you, and help you, and uphold you with my right hand of justice.”  Isaiah 41:10
